P&LE was formed on May 11, 1875 by William McCreery, a prominent Pittsburgh businessman, merchant and railroad builder.

After only a year of being in business, a fire broke out and destroyed their entire establishment. All that was saved from the blaze was one piano.

At 750 feet long and only 30 feet wide, people have said that it resembles more of a wall than an actual factory.
