Shea’s Theater is a former movie theater in Downtown Ashtabula, Ohio. The theater was opened in 1949, and was built in an architectural style known as “Streamline Moderne.” Shea’s holds some historical significance with its architecture, being one of the last of its kind.
Spanning 13 miles, a former Pennsylvania turnpike now sits abandoned. Pavement cracks and crumbles as overgrowth takes over what was once a main route of travel for people wanting to quickly pass through 7 different mountains.

Immediately upon letting go of the doorknob, we were greeted by a man holding a gun. Obviously even more shaken now than just a moment before, we walked quickly towards our exit rather than running as to not fall in the dark. We had only flashlights, and I think we collectively felt it would be better to walk quickly, than run and trip over something.
Finally, we had reached a room upstairs with just enough daylight remaining to see. Thousands upon thousands of molds and dishes remained placed along shelves lining the factory floor in all directions. I could hear the rain falling outside the partially open window as I stared across the dusty room.
Coalwood was a rather prosperous mining town from the early to late 1900s. I’m sure you could guess what they mined, but in case you were wondering, it was coal.
During studies, the EPA noticed that the dust blowing around through Picher contained zinc, lead, cadmium and other metals. By the 1980s, the metals had also seeped into groundwater, ponds, and lakes. Children had still regularly used these areas for swimming, which led to learning disabilities, among other problems in Picher children.
In 2002, the Miss USA pageant was held in Gary. During the event, Donald Trump decided to renovate the front of the theater using sheets of plywood to cover the windows. The plywood was painted to depict a false interior, and a marquee was mounted outside the front. The marquee then read “Jackson Five Tonite.” In 2009, after Michael Jackson’s death, plastic signs reading “Jackson Five Forever” were placed on both sides of the marquee.
